Carina Organics – a review

Ok, it’s time I let you in on a little secret…. I LOVE CARINA ORGANICS!!! Not only do they make incredibly high quality products that perform as well – or better than – mainstream products, but they also don’t contain any gluten, corn, soy, or other grains! They are free of any nastiness or toxins that could be absorbed through the skin! And they’re totally safe?! Huzzah! They’re even made close to where I live! I LOVE them!

I first discovered Carina Organics when I was looking for hair care products that were completely free of gluten, corn, soy, and fragrances. I thought I was dealing with the Bermuda Triangle of venn diagrams, until I found Carina. I was initially suspicious because they use glycerin in some products, but I was relieved to learn that it is from a palm source rather than one of the evil three (gluten, corn, soy). I also love that fragrance free is their default, with naturally derived fragrances like lavender, mint, citrus, and sweet pea available as well.

As I have rather thick, curly hair, the Moisturizing Shampoo and Deep Conditioner have been the best option for me. The unscented Styling Gel also does an excellent job of taming my curls – I scrunch it into my hair wet and allow it to air dry, scrunching again from time to time to break up any areas that got more than their share of gel, causing any crispiness to disappear without flaking. I can even add a bit of water (either with a mister bottle or damp hands) and re-scrunch it on the second day! I haven’t tried the hairspray yet, but I trust that it is just as awesome.

I’m also a huge fan of their Body Wash, Body Lotion, and the Daily Face Moisturizer. The Body Wash lathers well and leaves your skin feeling clean without being overly stripped of natural moisture. The Body Lotion is the same texture as Curell or Lubriderm – it absorbs easily, and nourishes my skin, even throughout the winter! And the Face Moisturizer is the perfect balance of lightness, easy absorption, and skin nourishing goodness. I’m always surprised by how long it lasts too. The only product that hasn’t been a win for me was the Daily Face Wash as I find it too drying for my skin. It would be best suited for someone who has oily skin, or who gets a lot of dirt on them in the course of the work day. I have not yet tried their deodorant, hand soap, or baby products, but given the impressively high quality and care that they put into everything, I can’t imagine them being anything less than awesome!

One of the other things I love about them is that they sell their products in larger bottles so you can buy your favourites in bulk. This allows you to save a little on the cost, and creates fewer bottles that need to be recycled. Naturally, all of their packaging is recyclable. The only people I would caution not to try their lovely products are those who are allergic to pine, or pumpkin and sunflower seeds.
